The Cambridge CPE (PROFICIENCY) exam has 5 parts:

1 - Use of English [44 questions in 90 minutes]
  • Part 1 - 1 open cloze with 15 questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 2 - 1 medium text with 10 deriviative questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 3 - 6 sets of 3 gapped sentences with 1 missing word.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 4 - 8 sentence completion questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 5 - 2 short texts with 2 short questions each PLUS a 50 word short essay on the 2 texts.  SHOW ME!

    2 - Reading [40 questions in 90 minutes]
  • Part 1 - 3 short texts with 18 multiple choice questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 2 - 4 medium texts with 8 multiple choice questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 3 - 1 long gapped text with 6 questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 4 - 1 long text with 7 multiple choice questions.  SHOW ME!

    3 - Speaking [approximately 10 questions in 19 minutes]
  • Part 1 - General questions for 3 minutes.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 2 - Compare and contrast pictures with your partner for 4 minutes.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 3 - Talk about a prompt card with a question on your own for 2 minutes (each).  SHOW ME!
  • Part 4 - Follow up questions on spoken topics during test for 8 minutes.  SHOW ME!

    4 - Writing [2 questions in 120 minutes]
  • Part 1 - An obligatory question on usually a i) report or a ii) letter for 1 hour.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 2 - A choice of 4 questions, usually i) letter, ii) memo, iii) proposal, iv) report or v) article for 1 hour.  SHOW ME!

    5 - Listening [28 questions in 40 minutes (everything heard twice)]
  • Part 1 - 4 short extracts with 2 multiple choice questions each.  SHOW ME!

  • Part 3 - 5 questions of 4 multiple choice questions.  SHOW ME!
  • Part 4 - 6 questions on finding the speaker's main ideas and if they agree or not.  SHOW ME!
